The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations

To see rare masterpieces, visit the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations. Built in the monument of Fort Saint Jean in Marseille, this gallery is dedicated to study and for the sharing of anthropological heritage linked to the European and Mediterranean era.

MUCEM, one of Marseille's greatest prides
This iconic symbol of Marseille has much to say about humanities and social sciences. Designed by Rudy Ricciotti, the museum has a cubic shape of 72 m2 on each side and has the two facades encased in a mesh. The color of the sea, the rocks and sky enrich this architectural feat. This unique place uses the artistic expressions of the two banks of the Mediterranean. The MUCEM has inherited the collections of the "Musée national des Arts et Traditions populaires" and the Musée de l'Homme (Museum of Humanity) and therefore has a collection of more than one million objects.

The 40 000 m2 structure is made of three sites. On the ground floor, you will discover centuries of Mediterranean civilization history. The top floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions and the Fort Saint Jean invites you to discover Folk Art and an exhibition of daily-life objects.

You may go for a walk in the 12 000 m2 garden of the « Jardin des Migrations » which harbor the secrets of the Mediterranean flora and fauna: olives, figs, vine, … will please you.

Moreover, during your visit to the MUCEM, you may also discover watch movies and shows, go concerts and workshops.
