Exhibition: Otto Dix, the Isenheim Altarpiece

Exhibition at Unterlinden museum of Colmar

You may wonder the connection between Otto Dix (1891-1969), a famous German artist labelled “degenerate” by Hitler, and the most impressive work of art in the Museum, Matthias Grunewald’s Isenheim Altarpiece (1512-1516). Otto Dix, who had been strongly influenced by this fine painting, actually saw it while a POW in a camp near Colmar in 1945.

Over a hundred works of art from the museum collections, loans from public and private collections, together with hitherto unseen works, letters, photographs, drawings…are displayed as a tribute to his genius.
