Centre Pompidou-Metz

Located in Metz, this monument is an emblem of contemporary architecture, first example of decentralisation of a Parisian institute, allowing contemporary art to meet a new public. An artwork created by the architects Shigeru Ban, Jean de Gastines and Philippe Gumuchdjian which is a must to discover.

According to Shigeru Ban, a Chinese hat he bought at Paris inspired him the concept of a structural architecture made of mesh and interlacing fibres. 12th May 2010, the vocational Centre Pompidou was inaugurated in the town of Metz. Its goal: welcome the best of modern and contemporary art through exhibitions and live shows. The 10 000 sqm exhibition hall, bright and illuminated, strong and light at the same time, symbolises modern art and contemporary art. Like a white curtain on a wooden structure, it embellishes the town of Metz with its specificity, volume and originality.

The inside offers an extraordinary décor with a blonde roof, the structured wall is painted in white while the concrete floor is grey pearl. In a whole, it looks like a spacious capital surrounded by a parvis and two gardens. The Centre Pompidou is located in a vast hexagon marked by three crossed-riding galleries. A lightly inclined garden is located in the north, partially forested and planted by prunus, with grass path that leads to the centre and the railway station.

At the south is found a private area composed of a dense mineral and vegetal zone planted by birches which can contain a terrace during summer. It is an exceptional place built to welcome unique experience. Every year at the Centre Pompidou are held events based on temporary exhibitions. This institution has an unique asset, that of having one of the best contemporary and modern art collections in Europe with about 76 000 artwork. Alongside the expositions, the Centre Pompidou has a lot of live shows, cinema, and conferences always willing to surprise visitors with new experiences and to create convivial moments.
